Starlink price dropped right after you bought? What the 30-day window can and can't do

The Mini fell to $149 on Oct 2, 2026, days after some people paid $199. Here's the only route we know of, the risks in it, and what to check if you bought at a store.

We may earn a referral reward from a link on this page. How we make money.

Timeline card: a Mini bought on starlink.com in late September 2026 at $199; on Oct 2, 2026 the price falls to $149. A bracket shows Starlink's 30-day hardware return window covering the cut, labelled return and re-order, the only route we know of. A note says we found no Starlink price-adjustment policy.
If a cut lands inside your 30-day window, returning and re-ordering is the only route we know of on starlink.com.

Key takeaways

  • We found no Starlink price-adjustment policy. If the price falls after you buy on starlink.com, there's no form to claim the difference.
  • starlink.com gives a full hardware refund if the kit comes back undamaged within 30 days. Inside that window, returning and re-ordering at the new price is the only route we know of.
  • Return-and-rebuy has costs: days without internet, a possible demand surcharge on the new order, and the risk the lower price isn't offered at your address.
  • Store buyers have the store's return window and the store's own price policy, which we haven't sourced. Ask at the service desk with your receipt.
  • Rentals have no purchase price to drop, so there's nothing to recover; installment buyers should check the balance due if they cancel.

If the Starlink price drops after you buy, there’s no form to claim the difference: we found no Starlink price-adjustment policy. What starlink.com does offer is a full hardware refund if the kit comes back undamaged within 30 days. If the cut lands inside that window, returning the kit and ordering again at the lower price is the only route we know of. It works, but it isn’t free of cost or risk, and store buyers follow a different set of rules.

This isn’t hypothetical this month. On Oct 2, 2026, starlink.com cut the Mini to $149. Since Jul 28, 2026 it had sold for $199, or $16 a month on its first payment plan. Anyone who ordered a Mini in the last days of September is inside the window right now.

The two routes, by where you bought

Where you bought Price-adjustment policy Return window (as logged) What you can do
starlink.com None found 30 days, undamaged, full hardware refund Return and re-order at the new price
Home Depot Not sourced; ask 90 days for most items; 30 for some electronics Ask about an adjustment; otherwise return within the window
Best Buy Not sourced; ask 15 days (60 for paid members); 14 for activatable devices Ask first; the window may be short
Costco Not sourced; ask 90 days for listed electronics (Starlink not named) Ask at the membership counter
Walmart Not sourced Not confirmed on walmart.com Check the receipt and the seller

The store return windows come from store policy pages read through search snippets or older articles, and none names Starlink specifically. Our return windows guide has the caveats for each.

Route 1: return and re-order on starlink.com

Decision tree. Start: the price fell after you bought on starlink.com. Question 1: is it within 30 days of purchase and is the kit undamaged? No: nothing to recover, keep the kit. Yes: question 2, does checkout show the lower price at your service address? No: keep the kit. Yes: question 3, can you live with days offline and a possible surcharge on the new order? No: keep the kit. Yes: order at the new price, then return the old kit inside the window, keeping the tracking number.
Check the new price at your own address before you send anything back.
  1. Find your order date. The 30 days run from the purchase, so count from your order or delivery confirmation, whichever Starlink’s terms use for your order. If you’re close to the edge, don’t wait.
  2. Check the new price at your address. Many prices are “starts at” figures, and regional offers depend on the address. The Mini’s $149 is a “starts at” price. If checkout doesn’t show it to you, stop here.
  3. Inspect the kit. The refund is for a kit that comes back undamaged, with everything that came in the box.
  4. Decide the order of operations. Ordering the new kit first means a short overlap instead of a gap, but you’re paying for two kits until the refund lands. Returning first means days offline.
  5. Start the return in your Starlink account and ship it as instructed. Keep the tracking number until the return is marked received.
  6. Watch both charges. Confirm the refund posts and the new order shows the new price.

The costs nobody puts in the headline

  • Days without internet, if you return before the new kit arrives. For someone who works from home, that can cost more than the saving.
  • A demand surcharge. Starlink’s support page describes a one-time charge in high-demand areas when you buy, activate, change plan or move into one, refunded with a 30-day return. Returning refunds the old one, but a new order at the same address may be charged again. Check checkout.
  • The price may not be there for you. Prices and offers can vary by address.
  • Your plan. Returning hardware doesn’t by itself manage your service. Check what your account shows before and after.
  • The free month, one line: a referral credit only applies to new customers signing up on starlink.com, and whether a re-order counts is something we can’t confirm.

A worked example: the Mini at $199, then $149

Sam ordered a Mini on starlink.com in late September 2026 for $199 and set it up on a Roam plan at $55 a month. On Oct 2 the Mini dropped to $149. Sam is inside the 30 days and the kit is undamaged.

  • The saving: $50, the gap between $199 and $149, if Sam’s address shows $149 at checkout.
  • The cost: a second order placed before returning the first (so no gap on the road trip next week), then the first kit returned inside the window with tracking.
  • The check: is the Roam plan unaffected by swapping the kit? Sam confirms in the account before shipping.

If Sam had bought on the $16-a-month payment plan instead, there’s one more step: that plan had a balance due if you cancelled early, so Sam would check what the account shows as owed before returning anything. Our Mini installment guide covers both payment plans.

Route 2: you bought at a store

A store kit is a store purchase, so Starlink’s 30-day hardware refund isn’t the relevant rule; the store’s is. Two things to ask at the service desk, with the receipt in hand:

  1. “Will you adjust the price to your current price?” If the store itself has cut its tag, a price adjustment may be simpler than a return. We haven’t sourced any store’s adjustment policy for Starlink.
  2. “Will you match starlink.com?” Stores often treat a manufacturer’s own site differently from a rival store. We haven’t sourced an answer for any store, so ask rather than assume.

If both answers are no and the window is still open, a straight return gets your money back, and you can order on starlink.com. That’s a bigger gap this month than usual: on Oct 5, 2026 the Home Depot and Best Buy Mini listings we saw in search results were around $249, about $100 above starlink.com’s $149, unless a store has matched since.

A worked example: a store Mini at $249.99

Jo bought a Mini at Best Buy for $249.99 the week before the cut. Best Buy’s standard window is 15 days, and 14 for activatable devices; we couldn’t confirm which applies to Starlink. Jo asks first whether Best Buy will adjust or match. If not, Jo returns it inside 14 days to be safe and orders on starlink.com, where the Mini starts at $149. A restocking fee may apply to activatable items, so Jo asks about that too before deciding. Our Best Buy guide has the details.

Rentals and the $0 up-front kit

If you rented, there’s no purchase price to drop, so there’s nothing to recover. What can change is the rental fee: it was $10 a month for new Residential customers from about Jun 9, 2026, and $0 in select areas since about Jul 20, 2026. Whether an existing rental moves to a lower fee isn’t something our sources cover. Check your bill.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting to see if the price falls further. The 30-day clock keeps running.
  • Returning before checking checkout. The lower price may not show at your address.
  • Forgetting the surcharge when you work out the saving.
  • Assuming a store will match starlink.com. Ask with the receipt in hand.
  • Throwing away the box. An undamaged, complete return is the condition.

What we don’t know

  • Whether Starlink has any unpublished price-adjustment practice. We found none in its support articles.
  • Each store’s price-adjustment and price-match rules for Starlink.
  • Whether a re-order after a return keeps every term of the original order.
  • Whether the demand surcharge is charged again on a re-order at the same address; it depends on the address.

What to do next

Our help page for a deal that expired or isn’t offered at your address covers the related problem of a price you read about but can’t get. The Mini deals page has the current Mini price and its history, and the store vs starlink.com tool compares a shelf tag with starlink.com in one step. If you bought at a store, see bought at a store.

Questions people ask

Will Starlink refund the difference if the price drops after I buy?

We found no Starlink price-adjustment or price-protection policy. starlink.com does offer a full hardware refund if the kit comes back undamaged within 30 days, so returning and re-ordering is the only route we know of.

I paid $199 for a Mini in September 2026 and it's now $149. What can I do?

If you're still inside 30 days of your order and the kit is undamaged, you can return it for a hardware refund and order again at $149, if your address shows that price. Weigh the days without service and any surcharge first.

Does Best Buy or Home Depot price-match Starlink?

We haven't sourced either store's price-match or price-adjustment rules for Starlink. Stores often treat starlink.com differently from other retailers. Ask at the service desk with your receipt before you assume anything.

Can I return a store-bought kit to buy it cheaper on starlink.com?

If the store's return window is still open, yes, a store return is a store return. Windows we've logged: Home Depot 90 days for most items or 30 for some electronics, Best Buy 15 days or 14 for activatable devices, Costco 90 days for listed electronics.

Do I lose my service if I return the kit?

Returning hardware doesn't by itself manage your plan. Check your account: if you're re-ordering, plan the gap between sending the old kit and receiving the new one.

What if I'm on the Mini installment plan?

The first Mini payment plan ($199 or $16 a month) had a balance due if you cancelled early. Check what your account shows as owed before you return anything.
