Where to buy
Store kit or starlink.com: which is cheaper to start?
Home Depot, Best Buy, Costco and Walmart sell Starlink kits. The shelf price is only half the comparison: a store kit can never get the referral free month, and returns follow the store's rules.
We may earn a referral reward from a link on this page. How we make money.
Short answer
For a first-time customer, starlink.com usually wins: the Standard kit costs about the same at both ($349 on starlink.com), the Mini was about $100 cheaper on starlink.com on Oct 5, 2026 ($149), and only a starlink.com order can get the free month. The store wins when it runs a real sale, when you already had Starlink (no free month either way), or when you need to own the kit for Standby.

Store prices we're tracking
Store pages block automated checks, so these prices come from search results until a person opens each page. That's why they're marked Unclear. Check the shelf before you trust any of them, including ours.
| Store | Item | Price | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home Depot | Standard kit | $349 | Unclear | $349 ($299 after $50 off with a new Home Depot card). Store kits never get the referral free month. Price read from a search snippet, not the page. |
| Home Depot | Mini | $249 | Unclear | $100 above starlink.com's current Mini price, unless the store has matched it since. |
| Best Buy | Standard kit | $349.99 | Unclear | Store kits never get the referral free month. Price read from a search snippet. |
| Best Buy | Mini | $249.99 | Unclear | About $100 above starlink.com's current Mini price. |
| Costco | Standard kit | $349 | Unclear | $349 with 2 months of service credit. Two months of credit beats one referral month, if the credit applies to your plan. Costco's own page wasn't checked. |
| Costco | Standard kit | $175 | Unclear | $175 in warehouse. One low-authority blog reports it. Costco hasn't confirmed it and we couldn't. |
| Walmart | Standard kit | $349 | Unclear | Check the seller: a marketplace listing isn't Walmart selling the kit. |

Two rules decide most cases. The free month: kits bought from retailers, resellers or through an account transfer don't qualify; credits are only issued when you sign up on starlink.com. Returns: on starlink.com you get a full hardware refund if the kit comes back undamaged within 30 days; at a store you get the store's policy, which ranges from about two weeks to 90 days (see each store's page).
Which should you pick?
| Your situation | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Never had Starlink, store price is the same as starlink.com | starlink.com | Same kit, plus a free month and a 30-day return. |
| Store is on sale by more than one month of your plan | Store | The sale beats the free month. Run the tool to be sure. |
| You had Starlink before | Whichever is cheaper | No free month for you anywhere, so it's the shelf price against starlink.com's price. |
| Seasonal cabin, you'll pause service for months | Own a kit (store or buy online) | Standby is not available on select rental kits per Starlink. |
| You want the Mini | starlink.com, unless the store matches | The store listings we saw were about $100 higher on Oct 5, 2026. |
| You need it today, in hand | Store | A shelf kit beats shipping, if you accept losing the free month. |
Before you buy at a store
- Compare the shelf price with the starlink.com price for your address. Regional prices only show at checkout.
- Ask yourself if you've ever had a Starlink account. If yes, the free month isn't in play either way.
- Check the seller. A marketplace listing on a store's site is a third party with its own return rules.
- Read the store's return window on the receipt, and keep the box.
- Know that a store kit still needs a plan ordered on starlink.com, and the demand surcharge (a one-time charge in high-demand areas when you buy, activate, change plan or move into one; refunded with a 30-day return) still applies.
What happens after
Store kit
You set it up, then pick a plan in the Starlink app or on starlink.com. The first bill is the full plan price; there's no referral credit.
starlink.com order
The kit ships; your first bill is the full plan price. With a referral link and a first-time account, the free month shows as a credit on your second bill.
Either way
If the price drops within your return window, returning and re-buying is the only way to get the new price. Check the window first.
When this is the wrong choice
- If a store sale beats starlink.com by more than a month of your plan, buy at the store. That's the cheaper path.
- If you've had Starlink before, the free month doesn't apply to you anywhere. Compare prices only.
- If money is tight, compare lower-cost internet options and assistance programs first. A cheaper kit doesn't make the monthly plan cheaper.
Questions people ask
Is it cheaper to buy Starlink at Home Depot or Best Buy?
For a first-time customer, usually not. On Oct 5, 2026 both stores listed the Standard kit at about the starlink.com purchase price and the Mini about $100 above it, and a store kit never gets the referral free month. A store sale (like Home Depot's $279 kit in November 2025) can flip that, so compare the shelf price with the tool above.
Do store kits get the referral free month?
No. Starlink issues the referral credit only when you sign up on starlink.com. Kits from retailers, resellers or account transfers are not eligible.
Does a store kit skip the demand surcharge or a waitlist?
No. The surcharge and any waitlist depend on your service address, not on where the box came from.
Can I activate a store kit on a Residential plan?
Yes. You own a store kit, so there is no rental to return, and you can pause with Standby where a rental kit sometimes can't.
Does a store gift card stack with a starlink.com offer?
A store promotion is the store's own. You can use it, but you then can't also get the referral free month, because the kit didn't come from starlink.com.
