"Free Starlink dish": what the phrase has meant in each offer since 2025
Commitment kits, $0 rentals and free Mini add-ons: what each one asked of you, when it ran, and the one kind of 'free' that has never appeared in our log.

Key takeaways
- Every "free Starlink dish" offer since 2025 has come with a condition: a 12-month commitment, a rental you return, or a Mini tied to the Max plan.
- Live as of Oct 5, 2026: a $0-up-front Standard kit rental in starlink.com's national listing, and a free Mini rental with Residential Max.
- Ended: the $0 kit with a 12-month commitment (Apr 30 to Jun 25, 2025, select areas).
- We have never logged a kit you own, for $0, with no plan, term or return obligation.
- The monthly plan is never free. Residential started at $55/mo when we checked on Oct 5, 2026.
A “free Starlink dish” has meant three different things since 2025, and none of them was a dish you own for nothing. It has been a $0 kit in exchange for a 12-month commitment (select areas, 2025, ended), a $0-up-front rental that Starlink owns and you return (live in starlink.com’s national listing on Oct 5, 2026), and a free Mini rental for Residential Max customers (live since early August 2026). The monthly plan has never been free in any of them.

All rows come from our deals log, where ended offers stay on the page, struck through with their end dates.
Meaning 1: free in exchange for a commitment
From Apr 30, 2025, Starlink waived the Standard kit’s price in select areas for customers who agreed to keep Residential service for 12 months. Broadband Breakfast reported the start, and its Jun 13, 2025 follow-up reported the end; we log it as ending Jun 25, 2025, with a flag because one source gave a later date (Jul 14, 2025).
This is the closest Starlink has come to a free dish you keep. The string was the commitment: leave early and you owe a prorated change fee, per Starlink’s support page on commitment offers. For anyone sure they’d keep Starlink for a year, that was a good trade. For anyone unsure, the fee made it a gamble. The full terms are in the 2025 $0 kit with a 12-month commitment.
Meaning 2: free to start, because you’re renting
The most common “free dish” today is a rental. starlink.com’s national listing on Oct 5, 2026 showed the Standard kit at $0 up front as a rental. What that means:
- Starlink owns the kit. You never own it, whatever you pay monthly.
- You must return it. Within 30 days of cancelling, or you pay its full retail price.
- The activation fee is address-based. The national listing showed $0; your address can differ.
- A monthly rental fee may apply. A $10/mo fee was added around Jun 9, 2026, then cut to $0 in select areas from about Jul 20, 2026 (secondary source). Where the $0 isn’t offered, the $10 can still apply.
- Standby may not be available. Starlink says Standby, its low-cost paused mode, isn’t available on select rental kits.
So “$0” is real, but it’s $0 to start, not $0 to own. How the rental works breaks down every charge.
Meaning 3: a free Mini as an add-on
Since early August 2026 (sources say Aug 7 to Aug 11), Residential Max customers can get a Mini at no charge, as a rental. Max is the most expensive Residential plan: $130/mo when we checked on Oct 5, 2026, against $55 for the 100 Mbps tier. So the Mini is free only in the sense that it’s included with a plan that costs more than double the entry tier. If you’d choose Max anyway, it’s a real extra. If you’d pick Max only to get the Mini, compare that with buying a Mini, which starlink.com listed from $149 on Oct 2, 2026.
Tesla North reported on Sep 22, 2026 that the free Mini rental had expanded to every Residential plan in “select countries.” starlink.com’s US national listing on Oct 5 didn’t show it for plans other than Max, so we list that report as unclear. Free Mini with Residential Max has the details.
Near-free: deep discounts that weren’t free
Two 2025 offers get called “free” in some headlines but weren’t: the half-off kit at $175 (Aug 11 to Sep 12, 2025, nationwide) and the $89 kit in low-demand areas from Sep 13, 2025 (reported for ID, IA, KS, NE, NV, NM, ND, SD and WY). Both were purchases: you owned the kit. Both have ended. They’re in the price-drop history alongside the list prices.
What “free” has never meant
Across every row in our log, we have never seen:
- A kit you own, for $0, with no commitment, rental or plan condition.
- A free monthly plan. Every offer above still charged for service.
- A free dish from a store. Retailers sell kits at a price; they don’t rent them.
If you see an ad promising all three, look for the condition in the fine print, or check whether it’s a real Starlink offer at all. Our fine print page explains activation fees, rentals and surcharges.
Which kind of free suits you
| If you… | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want the lowest cost to start and will keep service for a while | $0-up-front rental | Nothing up front; return when you cancel |
| Need to pause service seasonally | Buy the kit | Standby isn’t available on some rental kits |
| Want a portable kit and already use Max | Free Mini rental with Max | Included with a plan you’d pay for anyway |
| Want a portable kit but not Max | Buy the Mini from $149 | Cheaper than upgrading to Max just for the Mini |
| Are sure you’ll stay 12 months | Watch for a commitment offer | The 2025 one gave you the kit to keep |
| Might cancel soon | Rental or a 30-day starlink.com return | Avoid commitments with early-exit fees |
A worked example: rent at $0 or buy at $349?
Take a hypothetical household that expects to keep Starlink for at least a year at a single home and never pause. Renting at $0 up front, where the monthly rental fee is $0, costs nothing extra for the hardware; they return the kit when they leave. Buying costs $349 up front (where purchase is offered) and they keep a kit they could resell or reuse. If the $10/mo rental fee applies at their address, the rental adds ten dollars to every bill instead.
Now change one fact: they own a summer cabin and want to pause service each winter. A rental may not allow Standby, so they’d have to cancel and return the kit, then rent again in spring. Buying is the better fit. The “free” option is only free if it fits how you’ll use the service.
Common mistakes
- Reading “$0” as “yours.” A rental stays Starlink’s.
- Forgetting the return deadline. 30 days after cancelling, or full retail price.
- Upgrading to Max for the free Mini without comparing the Mini’s own price.
- Assuming a regional offer applies to you. The commitment kit and the spring promos were limited to some areas.
- Trusting old headlines. “Starlink dish free with 12-month commitment” stories describe an offer that ended in June 2025.
What we don’t know
- Whether starlink.com offers your address a purchase, a rental or both; only checkout shows it.
- Whether the free Mini rental now applies to every US Residential plan.
- Whether Starlink will run another commitment-for-kit offer.
What to do next
Our free kit page shows every live $0 offer and its catch, updated when a row changes. If you’re comparing a rental with a store purchase, where to buy Starlink lays out the lines side by side. Definitions for rental, commitment and Standby are in the glossary. If you read about a free offer that isn’t at your checkout, why a deal isn’t available to you explains the usual reasons: it ended, or it was limited to other addresses.
Questions people ask
Can you get a Starlink dish for free?
You can get one for $0 up front, but not with no strings. As of Oct 5, 2026, starlink.com's national listing showed the Standard kit as a $0-up-front rental: Starlink owns it, and you return it within 30 days of cancelling or pay its full price.
Is the Starlink dish free with a subscription?
Only as a rental. When you rent, the kit stays Starlink's property. In 2025 there was also a $0 kit you kept in exchange for a 12-month commitment, in select areas; it ended Jun 25, 2025.
Is there a free Starlink Mini?
Since early August 2026, starlink.com has offered a Mini as a no-charge rental to customers on Residential Max ($130/mo, checked Oct 5, 2026). It's a rental you return. A Sep 22, 2026 report said it expanded to every Residential plan; we couldn't confirm that.
Do I have to return a free Starlink dish?
If it's a rental, yes: within 30 days of cancelling, or you're charged the kit's full retail price. The 2025 commitment kit was yours to keep, but leaving the commitment early cost a prorated fee.
Is a free Starlink kit better than buying one?
It depends on how long you'll keep service and whether you need to pause. A rental costs nothing up front, but you never own it and Standby isn't available on some rental kits. A purchased kit (around $349) is yours.
Why do some sites say the Starlink dish is free when I see a price?
The free and $0 offers in our log were regional or address-based, or have ended. Only starlink.com's checkout for your address shows what you'll pay.
