What changed
Broadband Breakfast reported on Jun 13, 2025 that Starlink would stop offering free Standard kits to new Residential customers on Jun 25, 2025. The offer, which began in late April 2025, had removed the $349 hardware charge for customers who agreed to a 12-month Residential commitment.
The report linked the timing to updated federal guidance on the $42.5 billion BEAD broadband program, which opened new bidding in which Starlink could be reimbursed for equipment. We found no stated reason from Starlink itself.
"Starlink will end its promotion offering free user terminals to new customers on June 25."
Who it affects
New customers who had planned to take the free kit after Jun 25, 2025.
People who took the offer: their 12-month commitments ran to roughly mid-2026. Leaving early carried a prorated fee.
Shoppers reading older articles: many still describe the free kit as available, long after it ended.
What you can do now
This is background. If you took the offer, your commitment has very likely ended; your account shows the commitment date.
Our commitment offers page explains early-exit fees, and free kit offers covers today's $0 paths, which are mostly rentals.
If you're thinking of leaving a commitment offer early today, check the exit fee in your account first; it's prorated by how many months remain.
What hasn't changed
Customers who took the offer kept their kits under the original terms.
Starlink's 30-day return window for new hardware wasn't affected by the end of the offer.
The national kit price stayed $349 after the offer ended.
Context
For people who signed up near the end, the timing mattered: an order on Jun 24, 2025 still got the free kit with a commitment, while an order two days later paid for the hardware. Short notice before an offer ends is common in our log; this one at least came with a published end date.
The free kit lasted about eight weeks, from Apr 30 to Jun 25, 2025. It was followed in August by a nationwide half-off price ($175) and in September by an $89 price in low-demand areas, so hardware stayed cheap even after "free" ended.
BEAD is the federal program that funds broadband in unserved areas. If satellite providers can be reimbursed through it for equipment, giving kits away directly becomes less necessary, which is the link the report drew.
What we don't know yet
- Whether the BEAD guidance was the reason, as the report suggests, or one factor among several.
- How many customers took the offer; Starlink didn't publish a figure.
