What changed
satelliteinternet.com reported on Jul 20, 2026 that Starlink had reversed the $10-a-month equipment rental fee it introduced for new Residential customers in June. In the areas where the change applies, renting the Standard kit is free again; you still pay a shipping fee of about $20.
It's a regional change, limited to areas with spare network capacity. Starlink doesn't publish a list of them, so the only way to know is to enter your address on starlink.com.
You still don't own a rented dish. It goes back if you cancel, and the source notes you can buy it later for $349.
"After a little more than a month of adding the fee, it's now been removed from new purchases of residential Starlink."
Who it affects
New Residential customers in qualifying areas. Where the change isn't offered, the $10 monthly rental fee still applies.
Existing renters. The source talks about new purchases; we found nothing saying people already paying $10 a month were moved to $0.
What you can do now
Enter your exact address at checkout and look at the hardware line. If it shows $0 a month, the change applies to you.
Read the return terms before you rent: return within 30 days of cancelling or pay the kit's full price. Our free kit page explains rental vs buying.
If you'd rather own the dish, ask whether purchase is offered at your address, or compare a store kit, which you buy outright.
What hasn't changed
High-demand areas still carry Starlink's one-time surcharge, and Standby Mode isn't available on some rental kits.
Context
The fee lasted only about a month. In mid-June 2026 Starlink moved new Residential customers from buying the kit to renting it for $10 a month. By Jul 20 the fee was gone in areas with spare capacity, though not everywhere. Our deals log lists the $0 rental as a live, regional row.
A $0 rental and a $0 kit aren't the same thing. With a rental the dish stays Starlink's, and if you cancel you have 30 days to return it or you pay its full price. In 2025, by contrast, the free kit came with a 12-month commitment and was yours to keep once you met it.
What we don't know yet
- Which areas qualify, and whether the list changes month to month.
- Whether existing $10-a-month renters can ask for the $0 rate.
- Whether the $0 rental has an end date. None was stated, and the row in our log is still marked live, last checked Oct 5, 2026.
