What changed
Starlink introduced a speed-capped Residential plan in November 2025: 100 Mbps download, unlimited data, $40 a month, in a limited set of US regions. PCMag, in a story carried by Yahoo Tech on Dec 12, 2025, reported that the plan had been removed from the US site, while remaining available in Australia and Canada.
SpaceX didn't explain the removal. The report pointed to network capacity in the areas where it was sold as the likely reason, and quoted a customer who had upgraded for the holidays and found he could no longer move back to the $40 option.
Our log records the plan as running from Nov 10 to Dec 12, 2025.
"am now not able to go back to the 40 dollar a month option."
Who it affects
New customers who hadn't yet signed up: the plan was no longer offered.
Customers who switched away from it: the report suggests they couldn't switch back.
Customers who stayed on it: the report doesn't say they were moved off.
Shoppers comparing plans today: articles from November 2025 still mention the $40 plan, which hasn't been offered in the US since December 2025.
What you can do now
This is background. A 100 Mbps Residential plan exists today at $55 a month (since May 2026).
Lesson for any capped or promo plan: before you upgrade, check whether you can return to it. Our deal expired page covers what you can still do when an offer disappears.
If you're on any plan that's no longer sold, write down its name and price from your account page. If you change plans, you may not be able to switch back, as this customer found.
What hasn't changed
Per the report, the plan was still offered in Australia and Canada at the time; only the US version was removed.
Context
The plan arrived alongside Starlink's 2025 holiday hardware prices ($229 Mini, $279 Standard) in November 2025 and was sold only in a limited set of regions, mostly rural areas with spare capacity. Removing it a month later suggests those cells filled faster than expected, but that's the report's reading, not something Starlink said.
A similar idea came back in spring 2026 as time-limited promos: $39, $35 and $29 a month offers in areas with spare capacity, each with an end date.
What we don't know yet
- Whether customers who stayed on the $40 plan kept that price, and for how long.
- Exactly which US regions had it. RV Mobile Internet named South Dakota, Nebraska, Illinois and Nevada among them.
